Linux on MacBook Pro

I've tested 4 liveCDs on a MacBook Pro today and they more or less worked. I used PCLinuxOS 2007, Fedora 7 KDE LiveCD, Mepis 6.5 64 bit and Ubuntu 7.05 Polish edition. The winner is PCLinuxOS as it was the only one to properly configure the sound card. Fedora and Mepis worked, but without the sound. Ubuntu didn't managed to start the X.org server (it looked like VESA driver was missing). I noticed also reported by other users locked keyboard in GRUB, although in Mepis the keyboard was active. Overall the Linux support was quite good. I'll write about it more in a couple of days.

punFramework Upgrade

I've updated punFramework to work with punBB 1.3 r-681 and you can download it from phpclasses. punBB 1.3 r-682 tarballs can be found on sourceforge.
punFramework is a small MVC "framework" for punBB (1.3-dev), requires PHP5 - it allows you to create extra dynamic pages using forum layout very easily - you can make news, articles module or just wrap usefull stuff. In the package you will find 2 txt files - punFramework.txt describes how to install it (unpack & upload) and what is it and how it works. punFramework-example.txt - how to display 10 latest news (using topics and posts from selected forum) in punFramework. The example code is also included - just point your browser to /mvc.php?c=punnews

    PIL is great

In my job I got a task to check what can make good thumbnails of big JPEGs in shortest time. As the site is written in PHP I've tested MagicWand and GD plus PIL and EPEG. Making thumbs from few pictures (40MB) took for MagicWand Resize 4,7s, MagicWand Scale 1,77s, GD 0,8s, PIL 0,2s, EPEG 0,15s. EPEG is a e17 library which is designed to make JPEG thumbs but it lacks extra filters (sharpen) so the thumbs aren't top quality. PIL has antialias, sharpen and preserves ratio by default and is faster than GD and imagemagick (convert and MagicWand in PHP) so PIL won.
